An impressive individual performance from freshman Ryan Burnett helped the UNC men’s golf team finish second overall at this weekend’s Rod Myers Invitational at Duke.

The Tar Heels shot even par in Sunday’s final round to tie for second place alongside the Blue Devils at 10-under-par for the tournament. Penn State won the event by finishing at 12-under-par.

Burnett, meanwhile, ended up at 5-under-par for the event–which was good enough for a third place finish in the individual competition. His effort was the highest by a UNC freshman in the season-opening tournament in over 30 years.

Junior Austin Hitt finished sixth overall at 4-under par, while freshman Dougie Ergood took home 12th with a score of 1-under-par.

“We have a group of young guys that has the work ethic, mind set and attitude to do some really nice things this year,” says second-year Tar Heel head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “In terms of growing and getting better and getting the young guys some experience, this was a really good start.

“We played fairly well,” the coach said afterwards. “I don’t think we played great, but for these guys, especially with a new group, to go through what they went through today, being in contention, feeling the pressure, feeling the heat coming down the stretch, it will only help us in the future.”
