Sunday’s match in Stanford, California between the nation’s top two ranked women’s soccer teams saw the top-ranked Stanford Cardinal eke out a 2-1 victory in overtime over No. 2 UNC.

Madison Haley’s goal less than two minutes into the extra period served as the game-winner for Stanford (6-0-0), which won its sixth straight game to open the 2018 season.

Following a scoreless first half, Sophia Smith put the Cardinal ahead by scoring in the 63rd minute on a beautiful shot from the left side curled just inside the far post.

UNC (5-2-1) responded about 15 minutes later when freshman Brianna Pinto sent home a loose ball she recovered inside the goalie box–giving the Tar Heels a prime chance to possibly steal the upset on the road.

All that went out the door in a heartbeat, however, as Haley wasted no time finishing the game once overtime got underway.
