With four goals on Sunday at Dorrance Field, UNC senior attacker Jamie Ortega became the women’s lacrosse program’s all-time leading goal scorer in a 17-6 win over No. 25 Vanderbilt.

Ortega also added three assists for the top-ranked Tar Heels (5-0) as she ran her career goal total up to 199, one more than the previous UNC record of 198 held by Abbey Friend.

“To be honest, I really didn’t know I was even close to breaking the record until a couple of my teammates told me,” Ortega said after the game. “Once I broke the record, I was reflecting on all my years here and how far everyone on this team has come. Each year, I appreciate my teammates more and more. Yes, I’m the one that broke the record, but it’s such a team accomplishment.”

Scottie Rose Growney also added four goals on Sunday, while UNC’s all-time leader in points–Katie Hoeg–racked up two goals and three assists.

Eight different Tar Heels scored at least once as the team continues to steamroll its competition. Vanderbilt (2-2) became the fifth straight UNC opponent to score in single digits, as the Tar Heels have yet to actually allow more than seven goals in a game this season.
