Head coach Jenny Levy announced Wednesday the names of four players who will be captains for the UNC women’s lacrosse team this season, as her squad looks to reach its eighth NCAA Final Four in the last 11 years.

For the second straight year, junior Erin Kelly and senior Charlotte Sofield will carry the captain label–while juniors Maddie Hoffer and Katie Hoeg earning the honor for the first time.

Captains were chosen based on a vote by the team’s players and coaches.

Kelly has started on defense in each of the last two seasons and was named an Honorable Mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse magazine in 2018.

Sofield, meanwhile, is a defensive midfielder who has also started the majority of the last two years. In addition to providing solid defense in 2018, she also added three goals and an assist.

Although Hoffer has only appeared in eight career games, she has gained enough respect in the locker room to be voted as a captain prior to her third season in Chapel Hill.

Perhaps the most accomplished captain is Hoeg, who earned a starting spot for the first time last year and made the most out of it–posting 39 goals and a school-record 50 assists for another school record of 89 points.

This group will lead the Tar Heels into their regular season opener against defending national champion James Madison on Feb. 9.
