With a successful season in the rearview mirror and several talented players on the roster, it’s no wonder that coaches around the country are high on UNC men’s golf.

In the national coaches’ poll released Monday, the Tar Heels checked in at No. 4, the highest of any ACC program.

Ahead of UNC are No. 1 and defending champions Pepperdine, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 3 Arizona State. Arizona State eliminated Carolina in the NCAA quarterfinals in May.

The other ranked ACC teams include No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 11 Clemson, No. 12 Florida State, No. 17 Georgia Tech and No. 24 Notre Dame.

Notable names returning to Carolina this year are first team All-American Peter Fountain and U.S. Amateur runner-up Austin Greaser. Greaser will also be participating in the 2022 U.S. Open and Masters tournaments. Fountain set UNC’s single-season scoring record as a freshman in 2021, with an average score of 69.68. Greaser, a rising junior, needs to play three more tournaments to qualify as the second-best average scorer in program history.

Also returning are Ryan Burnett and Ryan Gerard, who are two of the three all-time scoring leaders in the history of the men’s golf program.

The Tar Heels’ first tournament will be the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, to be played September 11 and September 12. You can check out their full schedule here.
