Two of golf’s four majors in 2022 will feature a UNC student-athlete.
Junior Austin Greaser of the UNC men’s golf team placed second in the U.S. Amateur Championship Sunday after a 36-hole championship round against James Piot of Michigan State at the Oakmont Club in Pennsylvania. Both Greaser and Piot will now receive invitations to the 2022 U.S. Open in Brookline, MA and the 2022 Masters in Augusta, GA.
Incredible achievement by @AustinGreaser to finish second at #USAmateur. Last Tar Heel finalist was nearly 30 years ago. @UNCmensGolf under head coach Andrew DiBitetto is the next powerhouse @GoHeels program.

Greaser is the first UNC golfer to advance to the championship round of the tournament since Tom Scherner in 1992.
Greaser clinched a spot in the 64-player match-play phase of the tournament by tying for 20th out of 312 golfers at 1-under par after two rounds of stroke play. He and teammate Ryan Gerard both advanced to the round of 32 before Gerard was eliminated.
Each of the golfers Greaser defeated between the round of 32 and the championship round were seeded higher than him based on the standings after stroke play. Three were seeded in the top 10, including No. 4 Travis Vick of the University of Texas, who Greaser defeated in the semifinals.
Greaser will return to Chapel Hill hoping to boost a UNC men’s golf program that advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2021.
