What better way to honor former men’s basketball coach (and golf enthusiast) Roy Williams than winning a tournament in his honor? The UNC men’s golf team did just that Tuesday, finishing atop a 10-team field in the inaugural Williams Cup tournament in Wilmington. The tournament is named in honor of Roy Williams and his wife, Wanda.

Three Tar Heels finished in the tournament’s top five in the individual standings. Freshman David Ford finished in second place overall after firing a 67 and a 69 in the tournament’s last two rounds to finish at nine under par. His second place finish is a collegiate best. Not too far behind Ford were junior Austin Greaser and sophomore Peter Fountain, who finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

As a team, UNC led wire-to-wire over the tournament’s three rounds, never shooting worse than a 5-under 283. NC State came close to unseating the Tar Heels in round three, trailing by just one stroke early in the round. Ford’s strong final round proved critical in holding off the Wolfpack, who eventually finished in fourth place at five over par. Georgia then made a strong push late, but birdies from Greaser, Ford and reigning ACC Men’s Golfer of the Month Ryan Gerard ensured UNC’s lead wasn’t in any danger. The Bulldogs eventually finished in second place, nine strokes behind Carolina. Gerard tied for 11th place individually.

Dougie Ergood, coming off his first collegiate tournament win, finished in 16th place. No Tar Heel golfer finished above par.

The Williams Cup is the final tournament of the fall season for the men’s golf team. The Tar Heels won three of four tournaments during the season, and appeared at No. 1 in Golfweek’s NCAA polls for their efforts. Carolina currently sits at No. 5. To view the full poll, click here.

UNC’s next event is not until February, when the Tar Heels travel to the Bahamas for the Albany Collegiate Tournament.
