Roy Williams may have retired from UNC in April, but his name is still everywhere within the athletic department.

The UNC men’s golf team announced Tuesday it will host the first-ever Williams Cup tournament in October. The tournament honors Roy and Wanda Williams’ donations of over $5 million during their time at the university, including a $1.5 million donation to the Carolina Covenant in March.

“We wanted to acknowledge in a special and memorable way Roy and Wanda’s generosity that has made an enormously positive impact on college athletics, the University of North Carolina and our golf program,” said men’s golf coach Andrew DiBetto. “Beyond his passion for golf, the significant financial commitments the Williamses have made to fund scholarships for students are simply extraordinary.

“The Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf will have special meaning not only to our players, but players on every team in the field.”

The 10-team tournament, to be played October 25 and 26 at the Eagle Club in Wilmington, N.C., includes Carolina, NC State, Louisville and UNC-Wilmington, among others. Golf Digest ranks the Eagle Club as one of the country’s top 100 golf courses.

The men’s golf program’s full schedule is set to be released Thursday.
