Hillsborough residents should expect traffic delays along South Churton Street Friday due to a town utility project.

The local government recently shared a release about the change, saying the affected area is near Triangle Visions Optometry at 320 South Churton Street and the shopping center at 106 Rebecca Drive.

A lane shift between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. will affect the northbound lane along those streets. Traffic will be shifted to the center lane through the work zone.

The Town of Hillsborough said to avoid the area if possible or detour along Orange Grove Road. The government also said more of these lane closures can be expected in the coming days.

“Although most of the excavation is being performed outside of the roadway, temporary one-lane road closures and traffic shifts are expected through September,” said the town’s release. “Most traffic delays will occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays unless otherwise noted.”

The utility project is part of a Pipeline Utilities initiative to connect two water mains in four points along South Churton Street. The project started in May with the connections of the water mains near John Earl Street, Mayo Street, Oakdale Drive and Waterstone Drive.

The connection of the water mains aims to provide redundancy in the town’s water system and improve water quality.

In the event of inclement weather, the lane shift will be moved to Monday, September 27.
