The Town of Hillsborough is asking community members for their help redesigning South Churton Street. The local government will use input from surveys and public meetings to try and improve traffic congestion.
South Churton Street serves as the main entrance to the town from Interstates 40 and 85. Drivers take the road to and from downtown Hillsborough. Every day, around 20,000 to 25,000 travelers use the road to get to their destinations. Two design firms will head the Churton Street Multimodal Corridor Study, the town said in a release.
The State Transportation Improvement Program is focusing on South Churton Street starting at the Eno River, stretching to Interstate 40. The redesign aims to improve traffic congestion and a lack of north-south bike and pedestrian connectivity. Construction is set to start in the Fiscal Year 2031, according to the town.
The redesign will aim to meet the North Carolina Department of Transportation requirements which focus on safety and accessibility. Some of the requirements are some goals of the project are to improve traffic backup, increase safety, present a pleasing entryway into town, and help the entire community.
NCDOT developed ideas for the widening project in 2019, but no concept was chosen or designated by the town.
On June 15th at 6:30 p.m. and June 20th at 7:00 p.m., Hillsborough will host two appointed board meetings at its Town Hall Annex on 105 E. Corbin Street. In these meetings, the consultants will explain the project and have an open discussion for attendees to offer input. Community members are encouraged to attend.
This Summer and Fall, stakeholders, business and property owners, as well as residents in the South Churton Street corridor vicinity will be invited to focus groups. Later in the year, the community will be invited and encouraged to attend a multiday design workshop. More news will be released closer to that date.
