The Town of Chapel Hill is holding a community meeting Monday night to discuss proposed traffic calming measures around the future Wegmans site on Fordham Boulevard.
Construction has been underway at the Wegmans location as the buildings that used to house Performance Auto Mall have been torn down in recent months.
Monday night’s meeting is to “share and receive input” as town staff has been developing a draft plan for traffic calming measures “including all-way stop control, speed tables, on-street parking and other devices around the adjacent streets near Wegmans Property.”
Monday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Public Library.
The Chapel Hill Town Council and Orange County Commissioners approved an incentive package to recruit Wegmans to Chapel Hill in late 2016. Just over one year later, the council approved development plans for the project.
The grocery store is expected to open sometime in 2020.
Monday night as in March 4, 2019? I’m sure that’s the case given that the article was posted on the 25th but maybe it has already happened on Monday.
Thanks – Scott
Hi Scott, this meeting took place yesterday. I will make sure our authors put the date of the event itself in the article, rather than just the day of the week to avoid confusion.
Thanks – I so want to address this with the council. Will you and your team do a follow-up on the meeting? The information I reviewed some time ago had a roundabout behind the store which is great BUT look at the train wreck that is:
Sage intersecting 15-501 to Scarlet to service road to Old Durham. It has to be addressed. I remember when the super street went through and the big discussion was about “conflict points” if memory serves. It’s bad now, it’s confusing and it doesn’t work to regulate traffic. Autozone, Wendys, Hardees that whole bizarre intersection is already terrible. Just wait until Wegemans is jamming who knows how many people through that intersection. Wegmans is going to draw people from all over the area, not just Chapel Hill. I am excited that we are getting a Wegmans and agree with the work they did in 2016 but we can’t build it out then fix it.
All that said, I didn’t attend the meeting and I don’t know the current plans, perhaps that intersection is going to be addressed.
Thanks Again,
Scott
I agree completely with Scott. This intersection is terrible already and it’s going to get a whole lot worse. The whole small area needs to be reimagined in terms of traffic flow. Scarlet Drive may need to be closed to 15-501 entirely. Another way to get to Old Chapel Hill Road may be needed. This needs some creative minds working on it immediately.
