The Town of Chapel Hill approved the plans for the construction of a new Wegmans grocery store last Wednesday.

The site of the 130,000-square-foot grocery store will be 15 acres and located between 15-501 and Old Durham Road – the current location of Performance AutoMall.

The new Wegmans adds to a multitude of growth and construction in the area, including the nearby Blue Hill District and the remodeling of the intersection at 15-501 and Scarlett Drive.

“That whole corridor is going to be changing, and we want to make sure that it’s a pleasant experience for people,” said Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger.

Hemminger points to that intersection as being particularly problematic.

“That intersection right now of Scarlett Drive and 15-501 is just awful,” said Hemminger. “So these improvements, while coming in for the Wegmans project, will actually just improve the flow over there in general.”

The designs have added two more entrances at the State Employees Credit Union and on Service Road to help with congestion in the area.

Construction should be finished by early 2019.
