The Town of Chapel Hill will soon update some of the traffic signs on Laurel Hill Road following a recent injury to a minor.

The residential street, which is two lanes and runs between Fordham Boulevard and Country Club Road near UNC’s campus, will see new signage installed in the next week, according to the town government. The decision comes after emailed requests from a community member on March 8, which followed a young child sustaining injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle on the road the day before.

Town of Chapel Hill staff say they will post new signs, which will say ‘Hidden Driveway’ and have curve warnings with a 15 mph advisory, with the goal of alerting motorists to better watch for pedestrians. Staff has already added flags to the existing speed limit signs, according to a town spokesperson. The road currently has a 25 mph speed limit.

Laurel Hill Road does not have a sidewalk and has many spots of vegetation growing near the street, which community members say causes issues when pedestrians are walking along its edge.

The Chapel Hill community saw another motor vehicle-pedestrian collision on Monday. The Chapel Hill Police Department reported it was investigating an incident in the 400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard that sent one person to the hospital.
