The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a vehicle crash Monday night where a pedestrian was struck and injured.
A release from police said Chapel Hill officers responded to a reported vehicle and pedestrian collision in the 1100 block of North Carolina Highway 54. The crash happened in the eastbound lanes, which are close to the Kingswood Apartments community.
According to police, the pedestrian was transported to UNC Hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries. An update from Chapel Hill Police on Tuesday said the person was stable, but sustained “serious injuries.” The driver remained at the scene of the crash, and a spokesperson for the police department said, as of Tuesday, there are “no charges at this point” from the crash.
According to the police department’s data, Monday’s incident marks 19 pedestrian-involved collisions reported in Chapel Hill in 2023. That total surpasses the amount of reported pedestrian crashes in 2022, which the Chapel Hill Vision Zero Dashboard lists as 18.
While traffic was slowed by a lane closure along N.C. Highway 54 as emergency services responded to Monday’s crash, a Chapel Hill Police Department spokesperson said the road was reopened around 6:15 p.m.
No additional information is available as of Tuesday, according to Chapel Hill Police.

I have lived in chapel hill for more than 25 years and I am always amazed that the town has never made pedestrian crossing on 54 at the bus stops safe. It’s remarkable that pedestrian accidents don’t happen regularly, with the way people have to dash across the road to get to their bus stop or back to their apartments. I hope that this person is ok.
Hi there Alison — I believe because it’s a North Carolina highway, pedestrian crossings would fall under the responsibility of NCDOT instead of the town government. Both Chapel Hill and Carrboro hired a firm to do a safety study in 2019 to better help secure funding for improvements like you’re talking about. I believe there are plans for NCDOT to install pedestrian flashers and crossing signals in the next year.
Here’s a link on the Town of Chapel Hill’s website. Hope it’s helpful! https://www.townofchapelhill.org/government/departments-services/transit/bus-stop-upgrades/nc-54-pedestrian-and-bicycle-improvement
That is good to know. I have always wondered the same thing about pedestrian crossings on 54…another traffic light might also be a good idea, then pedestrians could cross in a crosswalk.
Good to hear, but there is still the question of why we have to wait for pedestrians to be injured or killed before these safety precautions are even initiated, let alone implemented. Both towns put in plenty of safety precautions for bicyclists, but ignore pedestrian safety (or pay lip service only).
