One person was injured Tuesday morning after a pedestrian collision at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Estes Drive.
Chapel Hill Police were called to the scene around 10:50 a.m. Their investigation found that Jason Ward, 46, was driving south on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and made a left turn to travel east on Estes Drive. While making the turn, Ward struck the pedestrian who was using a marked crosswalk to cross Estes Drive.
The pedestrian has since been taken to UNC Hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
The Chapel Hill Police Department charged Ward, an Efland resident, with failure to yield to pedestrian in a clearly marked crosswalk or regular pedestrian crossing.
Last week, dozens of people gathered along the sidewalks of North Estes Drive to advocate for more pedestrian safety measures. This demonstration came after two teenagers were struck while using a marked crosswalk near Phillips Middle School and Estes Drive’s intersection with Caswell Road on December 31.
For the past year, the Chapel Hill Police Department has been conducting “speed-enforcement operations” to encourage safe driving along Chapel Hill’s busiest roads and cut down on pedestrian injuries. These patrols were most recently conducted this Monday as well as Tuesday morning.

The occasional police operations haven’t changed a thing. There are still too many pedestrians killed or injured in Chapel Hill, especially on MLK and Estes Drive. Estes needs to become a 25mph zone with speed bumps. No more high density developments on Estes that increase traffic even further. Install traffic cameras for automatic ticketing, with penalties going towards schools, infrastructure improvements. The Chapel Hill government are amateurs and beholden to developers and realtors allowing increase in density without consideration of traffic impact and infrastructure improvements.
