The Chapel Hill Police Department charged a Durham man for his involvement in a motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian this weekend.

Nicholas Boyd, 46, will face a charge of failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The family of Sinclair Larson, a junior at UNC, shared about the collision earlier in the week. They described Larson as walking her dog, an Australian Shepard named Jasper, along East Franklin Street around 7 p.m. As she attempted to use a pedestrian crosswalk near Davie Circle, she was struck by a vehicle.

After the collision, emergency responders took Larson to the trauma center at UNC, while a neighbor close to the site of the collision took Jasper to an emergency veterinarian in Chapel Hill. The town said Sinclair has since been released and Jasper is “expected to make a full recovery.” The Larson family also has shared updates on social media revealing Sinclair and Jasper have been reunited and are heading back to Charlotte to continue recovery.

“This is an important reminder that roads are a shared space, and we all need to limit our distractions and increase our focus,” wrote the Town of Chapel Hill in its release. “People driving motor vehicles should always look for pedestrians when passing over crosswalks.

The Larsons have seen a community outpouring from both local community members and from community members in Charlotte, where they live. After the family started a GoFundMe to help cover some of the emergency medical bills for Sinclair and Jasper, more than 590 donors have contributed nearly $33,000 since Sunday.
