A car crash on East Franklin Street is causing traffic delays on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.

An overturned car between Elizabeth Street and Deming Road at 7:35 p.m. caused at least one westbound lane of East Franklin Street to be closed. Local first responders, including Orange County Sheriff’s deputies and Orange County paramedics, were on scene to treat the lone crash victim and block traffic. An eyewitness to the crash told Chapelboro the vehicle had only one passenger, who safely exited the car after the crash.

As of 8 p.m., the eastbound lanes of the road are not impacted by the crash response. Sidewalks on the westbound side of the street also appeared to be open, but access may be limited.

Vehicles traveling west can detour the area by taking Roosevelt Drive around the crash site or using Estes Drive and either Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or U.S. 15-501 to travel to downtown Chapel Hill.

Chapelboro has requested comment from Chapel Hill Police on the crash response. This story will be updated with further information as it becomes available.
