A driver struck and injured a pedestrian on North Carolina Highway 54 late on Sunday night — but according to Carrboro Police, the pedestrian was at fault in the incident.
The Carrboro Police Department confirmed a CBS 17 report of a pedestrian injury, saying the person was struck just before midnight along the part of N.C. 54 near Oleander Drive, which is an entrance to the Windwood neighborhood.
Carrboro Police Chief Chris Atack told Chapelboro the pedestrian was transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment and the latest updates to the department were the person is in stable condition. He said officers’ investigation afterward “revealed the pedestrian was at fault and it is unknown why the pedestrian was in the road at this location.”
Atack added that the driver of the vehicle was uninjured in the crash, but was “shaken up” by the incident. At this time, they will not face any charges from the collision.

According to North Carolina General Statute 20-174, any pedestrian who is crossing somewhere other than a crosswalk “shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.” Additionally, it states any pedestrian walking along a highway or space without a sidewalk is meant to walk “only on the extreme left of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction” and to yield to approaching traffic.
Atack told Chapelboro that Sunday’s crash marks the third pedestrian-vehicle collision so far in 2023 reported to the town.
On Monday afternoon, the Carrboro Police Department’s Twitter account shared a graphic with safety tips and good practices for pedestrians and bicyclists.

An intersection with a.) no sidewalk b.) no crosswalk markings.
The Town of Carrboro is to blame for this, not the pedestrian.
totally agree with you on this.
Meanwhile my son is in the hospital because some one hit him their! He has severe brain injury, broken hips, fractured spine along with multiple broken bones too many to list so if you’re the one that hit him keep him in your prayers he needs it and God don’t like ugly.
Sincerely his Mother
They need to slow down and watch for people walking and if their was a side walk he would of been on it and not in the hospital!
