The Carrboro Police Department announced on Friday that human remains were discovered in the last week and identified them as a resident who had been missing for two weeks.

A release from the department said the remains were found “in a wooded area near Hanford Drive in Carrboro,” which is a neighborhood north of Hillsborough Road and south of Bolin Creek. After working with the Medical Examiner’s Office, investigators said they positively identified the deceased as Daishi Tanabe — a Carrboro resident who police had been looking for since being reported missing on July 19.

Tanabe was last seen at his residence on the evening of July 13. In its prior release, the Carrboro Police Department said he was believed to be suffering from a cognitive impairment.

Friday’s alert said the cause of death is still under investigation, but police added there is “currently no evidence to suggest that Tanabe’s death is the result of a criminal act.” The department said there is not an ongoing threat to community safety.

No additional information is available to the public as of Friday afternoon, according to investigators.
