The Carrboro Police Department arrested and charged people related to a vehicle break-in witnessed during the early-morning hours of Monday.

A release from the department said at 4:42 a.m., a community member called 911 to report an active break-in happening along the 500 block of Smith Level Road, which includes several businesses and an apartment community. Upon arrival, police officers encountered three suspects who were taken into custody after a brief investigation.

Monday’s release said 18-year-old Jakori Leak of Hillsborough, 24-year-old Jaedan Leak of Chapel Hill, and 22-year-old Shamaun Richardson of Burlington will face a variety of felony charges, including breaking and entering a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and conspiracy. While breaking and entering crimes can also be misdemeanors, they can be raised in North Carolina if there is evidence the illegal entry was with the explicit intent to commit larceny.

Additionally, Carrboro Police said the trio are charged with possess of burglary tools and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods. Jakori Leak also faces a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

According to Monday’s alert, Leak is behind held with no bond at the Orange County Detention Center — while Jaedan Leak and Richardson were released on a written promise to appear in court.

The Carrboro Police Department used the break-in incident on Monday to remind community members of tips to prevent any illegal entry to vehicles. Community members are encouraged to always lock car doors and windows — even when parked on or near your property — and to not leave valuable items in sight. When parking in public areas, police encourage people to also park in well-lit areas or near security cameras and to call 911 if suspicious activity is witnessed.

For any community members who may have more information about Monday’s vehicle break-in, Carrboro Police encouraged the public to contact their headquarters directly at 919-918-7397 or to use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline (919-942-7515) or website.
