The Carrboro Police Department shared details on Monday of a fatal hit and run case from one week prior, saying investigators are still actively on the case after identifying a suspect who struck and killed an unhoused person.

A release from the department said 29-year-old Zachary Peeples died on April 15 from injuries suffered in a collision at 602 Jones Ferry Road, which is within the Willow Creek shopping center. Police said when officers responded shortly before 2 a.m., Peeples was suffering life threatening injuries and died after being transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Carrboro Police Chief Chris Atack told Chapelboro Peeples was experiencing homelessness and did not have a registered local address. He added that the man was struck after interacting with the occupants of the vehicle that hit him.

Police said the driver then fled the scene on April 15 — but Carrboro investigators were “able to gather evidence from the scene that led to the identification of the vehicle involved and the driver.” Monday’s release said 32-year-old Matthew Harr of Hillsborough was charged with felony hit and run over Peeples’ death. Presently, Harr is being held in the Orange County Detention Center with no bond.

Carrboro Police said the hit and run case is still open and encouraged people to contact the lead investigator on the case by calling 919-918-7413 or emailing evelazquez@carrboronc.gov. Additionally, those who wish to share anonymous information can use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline (919-942-7515) and website.
