The Chapel Hill Public Library has good news for the 1,000 – often more – people who visit it daily: more parking.

With the first phase of a plan to bring more parking to the library complete, 16 new spaces will soon be added with the second phase – thanks to a $185,000 gift from by the Friends of Chapel Hill Public Library. A release from the Town of Chapel Hill said construction on the additional spaces is slated to begin on Thursday, June 11, and will bring the total parking spaces available at the library to 223.

The release also confirms construction crews are building a bio-retention pond expected to “improve the local watershed while mitigating stormwater impacts, create a habitat for native species, and generate additional educational opportunities for the library’s environmental education program, Explore More.”

Traffic and library services, including contact-free curbside pickup and food bank distribution, will remain unimpeded and open for library visitors while the project is underway, according to the town. Construction is anticipated to be complete in two months.
