The Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill are teaming up for the second year to encourage residents and businesses to help clean up the towns’ urban streams.

The 2nd Annual Joint Creek Cleanup, which starts on March 13, will look a bit different this year due to public health concerns. Instead of leading organized groups, the towns are asking families and pods to participate in smaller cleanup groups.

During last year’s cleanup, participants picked up a total 5,280 pounds of trash. The towns are hopeful residents will overcome the pandemic’s challenges and show out in similar fashion between March 13 and April 17.

To join the challenge, participants must read these “Stay Safe” tips, locate a stream or area with trash in it, take pictures before and after cleaning it up, fill out the Litter Cleanup Data Sheet on Survey123, and tag the towns in the pictures posted to social media.

Challengers who complete the data sheet between March 13 and April 17 will have the chance to win prizes that include reusable straws, cloth grocery bags, water bottles and more.

The town governments say participants should dispose of the trash they collect in their personal bins. If more trash is collected than can fit in an individual’s personal trash can, participants are encouraged to take the excess to one of the local waste and recycling centers.

More information about the 2nd Annual Joint Creek Cleanup can be found here. The local governments say additional questions can be directed towards Sammy Bauer or Heather Holley.
