The North Carolina Department of Transportation will partner with the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro to install pedestrian and bicyclist improvements at three intersections along North Carolina Highway 54.
NCDOT will begin work Monday, Feb. 2 to install crosswalks with traffic signals at the highway’s intersections with:
- The Kingswood Apartments complex in Chapel Hill
- Abbey Lane in Carrboro
- Westbrook Drive in Carrboro
During construction work, motorists along Highway 54 should expect slowdowns Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. NCDOT says does not expect to shut down more than one lane at a time, and the project is expected to be finished in December.
The new crossings are located near Chapel Hill Transit stops. A 2019 study by the NCDOT called for these improvements and was endorsed by both towns. Since the study, serious collisions have occurred at two of the aforementioned intersections. In May of 2023, a vehicle struck and killed a motorcyclist near the Abbey Lane intersection, resulting in the driver being charged with a misdemeanor. Later that year, a vehicle struck and seriously injured a pedestrian near the Kingswood Apartments.
