Following the death of a motorcyclist struck in a crash last week, Carrboro Police announced on Tuesday the driver now faces a misdemeanor death by vehicle charge.

A release by the police department revealed that officers responded to a motor vehicle collision the night of Wednesday, May 24. The crash took place at the intersection of North Carolina Highway 54 and Abbey Lane — the entry and exit road of an apartment complex off the highway.

Carrboro Police said an investigation determined the driver of a passenger car, Coral Maxwell, failed to yield the right of way while turning and struck a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, 21-year-old Julius Stuart, was transported to UNC Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tuesday’s release said that Stuart has since died from those injuries suffered in the collision and crash.

Investigators said Maxwell, a 21-year-old Carrboro resident, was charged at the scene on May 24 with failure to yield the right of way. But with Stuart’s death, police upgraded Maxwell’s charge to misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Maxwell is slated to first appear in court over the charge on June 12, according to Carrboro Police. The department’s release on the incident can be found on the Carrboro town government’s website.
