The Carrboro Police Department announced new charges and suspects in relation to an investigation into gunfire near Carrboro High School earlier in April and a separate criminal violation at the school on March 6.

The Carrboro Police originally charged two juveniles in the investigation into the April incident: a 17-year-old Carrboro High student and a 16-year-old non-student.

In a release on Thursday, police said additional investigation has since led to charges against two new suspects and another charge against the 17-year-old. A 16-year-old Carrboro High student, who Carrboro Police are referring to as Suspect No. 3, is charged with felony possession of a firearm with an altered serial number and misdemeanor possessing a firearm as a minor from the April incident.

From the March 6 incident, a 15-year-old Carrboro High Student, referred to as Suspect No. 4, is charged with felony possession of a firearm on educational property. The 17-year-old originally implicated in the April incident is now facing a new charge of the same felony in addition to his previous charges. The 16-year-old non-student implicated with the 17-year-old is not facing any additional charges.

The Carrboro Police say the investigation into both incidents is active and ongoing and additional charges are possible. North Carolina law requires investigating agencies to not share the names of juvenile suspects, unless their charges and cases get moved to Superior Court and they are tried as adults.

The April 14 gunfire did not injure anyone, according to authorities, but it caused the Carrboro High School community to enter a brief lockdown and nearby schools to enter “secure mode” as police responded to the scene.
