A series of gunshots fired at a Hillsborough apartment complex earlier this week is leaving local police searching for information.

A release from the Hillsborough Police Department on Wednesday said investigators are searching for a suspect who walked into the parking lot of Cadence at Cates Creek Apartments and fired several shots before fleeing into nearby woods on July 3.

The department said officers responded to a shots fired report at 1000 Waterstone Park Circle, the address of the apartments, around 8 p.m. on Sunday. Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male who was wearing a black and gray hoodie, and said the suspect shot their firearm toward one of the apartment buildings.

Hillsborough Police said one vehicle was struck and apartment bedroom window was damaged from the gunfire, but no injuries were reported. Authorities have located and seized a vehicle “determined to be involved,” according to the department’s release.

The July 3 incident marks the latest gunfire-related case in Hillsborough, but specifically around an apartment complex. At the Bellevue Mill Apartments on Nash Street, a 17-year-old was found killed by a gunshot wound on June 30. In May, a drug deal turned into an armed robbery at the Gateway Village Apartments that left two people injured.

Police are encouraging anyone who may have information about Sunday’s incident or the suspect to contact Hillsborough Investigator Van St. Pierre by email or phone at 919-296-9533.
