A confrontation between two people breaking into vehicles and another two people trying to stop them led to gunfire on Wednesday, according to police.
A release through the Hillsborough Police Department said before 4 a.m. on Wednesday, a pair of residents at the Patriots Pointe apartment community off Orange Grove Road saw two people attempting to break into cars and approached them. One of the suspects then shot at the residents before all parties fled the scene — with the pair of perpetrators leaving in a vehicle, say police.
Hillsborough police officers responded to a call about the gunfire shortly afterward, with the department saying officers and deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle to Durham before losing sight of it. According to Wednesday’s release, the vehicle was found a short time later after being abandoned and was identified as one previously stolen from Raleigh.
Police said no one was injured in the gunfire during the confrontation. But the department used the opportunity to “strongly urge” those who witness active crimes to call 911 and avoid confrontation with criminals.
The attempted vehicle break-ins mark the second such string of break-ins in a week, as Hillsborough Police are continuing to investigate stolen cars and items reported from the Beckett’s Ridge, Pinewood Station and Waterstone neighborhoods during the overnight hours of July 18. Investigators did not indicate that Wednesday’s break-ins were connected.
