After a series of vehicle thefts and break-ins over the last month, the Hillsborough Police Department announced it has taken out juvenile petitions against two suspects — with more on the way.

A release from the department on Wednesday said between January 29 and March 4, community members have reported four motor vehicle thefts and more than ten vehicle break-ins around a variety of Orange County jurisdictions. Determining and charging suspects has been “a multi-agency effort,” according to the alert, because of the reach of the crime pattern. Hillsborough Police said two juveniles were tracked down by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office after a deputy saw them abandon a stolen vehicle on Tuesday morning. After that, local police took out 14 juvenile petitions against one of the suspects and seven petitions for a second.

The pair of suspects — identified by investigators, but not to the public in order to comply with North Carolina law — are not alone in their receiving of charges. Hillsborough Police said additional petitions for a third juvenile are pending and investigators are working to identify a fourth juvenile suspected in the crimes.

State law prevents the name of anyone under the age of 18 suspected or convicted of committing a crime from being publicly identified. If a suspect is tried as an adult and their case is moved to superior court, however, more information — including the juvenile’s name — could be revealed.

Hillsborough Police said Wednesday anyone who may have information regarding this case and string of car break-ins is encouraged to get in touch with the lead investigator, Andrew Jones, by email or phone (919-296-9562). Additionally, anonymous crime tips can be reported by calling 919-296-9555, messaging the police department through its Facebook page, or using the See it, Say it, Send it app and website.
