The Hillsborough Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting near in a downtown neighborhood that left one person dead on Wednesday night.

A release from the town on Thursday afternoon confirmed that a 20-year-old man died from a gunshot wound suffered around the 200 block of West Orange Street in Hillsborough, while an 18-year-old Hillsborough woman was also injured. Police found the two victims after receiving a call about gunfire around 10 p.m. and had each transported to Duke Hospital for treatment. The female victim’s injuries are non-life-threatening, according to Hillsborough authorities.

Neither victim was named in Thursday’s initial release, with Hillsborough Police saying the deceased’s family is being contacted.

The Hillsborough Police Department said it is continuing to look into the circumstances of the shooting and encouraged community members who may have information on the incident to get in touch with investigators.
