As political dominos continue to fall around the 2022 elections, a Hillsborough town commissioner is joining the race for North Carolina’s House District 50.

Matt Hughes, who has served on the town’s Board of Commissioners since 2018, announced his intentions to run for the district, which covers most of Orange County and all of Caswell County. The district is presently represented by Graig Meyer, who announced Thursday he will run for the state Senate as his term expires.

Hughes’ voting record aligns with many progressive causes, with him citing a need to push for such things in the state legislature in a release launching his campaign.

“We need a new generation of leadership that’s not afraid to lead boldly and think big,” said Hughes. “This new generation must not only fight against radical Republicans and their attacks on our way of life, including our precious democracy, but push for solutions that will benefit all who call North Carolina home. I’m running because I believe in a North Carolina that lives up to its ideals and is a state where its people are healthier, safer, better educated, and has more money in their pockets.”

In addition to serving in the Hillsborough town government, Hughes also is the Second Vice Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. He is a Hillsborough native, having graduating from Cedar Ridge High School and before getting his college degree at UNC.

District 50 is one of the North Carolina House districts largely unchanged by the new maps approved by the state legislature following new U.S. Census data.

The other House district in Orange County is District 56. In September, Jonah Garson and Allen Buansi each announced their campaigns to run for the district, which represents Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
