Town of Hillsborough Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Matt Hughes announced his campaign for a second term on the Board of Commissioners on Thursday.

“I am immensely proud of the work we’ve achieved in Hillsborough over the past six years,” Hughes said in a statement, “and therefore announce my campaign for a second term to continue that work.”

Hughes was first appointed to the Board of Commissioners in 2018, replacing the retiring commissioner Brian Lowen. Hughes was then elected to a full term in 2019. He has served as the town’s mayor pro tem since 2021, and at age 32 he is the youngest member of the Board of Commissioners. Hughes is also the president of the Northern Orange NAACP and has served as the second vice chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

In his campaign announcement, Hughes mentioned several priorities for a prospective second term, including combating climate change, upgrading water and sewer infrastructure and bringing regional rail service to Hillsborough.

Hughes previously ran for a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2022 but was defeated by Renee Price.
