With Juneteenth in the middle of the week, many of the local governments in Orange County held celebrations for the holiday this past weekend.

But the holiday itself is Wednesday, June 19, and that will alert some of the county’s operations to formally recognize the holiday of Black independence and full freedom from slavery.

Here’s a list of what services will be altered throughout Orange County:

Orange County Government

The official county holiday will be recognized on Wednesday, June 19, meaning all administrative offices will be closed.

Meanwhile, Orange County Solid Waste Management will also be off on Wednesday — which will affect the countywide curbside pickup schedule. With no recycling on Wednesday, solid waste will collect those residents’ items on Thursday and the collection schedule for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day. Additionally, the waste and recycling centers and county-run landfills will not be open on June 19.

Orange County Library will be closed and Orange County Public Transportation will only serve its Carolina Dialysis route on Wednesday for the holiday as well. Full service will restart on Thursday, June 20. More details about the county’s recognition of the holiday can be found here.

Town of Chapel Hill

Beyond the town’s administrative offices, the Chapel Hill Public Library, the Hargraves Center, the Teen Center, and the Community Center Indoor Pool will be closed.

The town’s regular food distribution at the Eubanks Park & Ride Lot is also canceled in observance of the holiday. After that, Chapel Hill is shifting to a distribution schedule on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month — meaning the next three food distributions are June 26, July 10, and July 24

The regular food distribution at Eubanks Park & Ride Lot is canceled on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of the holiday. Starting in July, the Town will hold food distributions on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This means the next three food distributions will be on June 26, July 10, and July 24.

Chapel Hill Transit will operate its Sunday service on for the holiday. That does include the U and NU routes this year, and the FCX and NS routes will run on their normal weekday schedules. The 420 route will not be available, while the EZ-Rider service will only be from 8:15 a.m. to 6:52 p.m.

Residential trash, commercial trash, and yard trimming pick-ups will not be affected by the holiday, according to the town.

Town of Carrboro

All town offices and facilities for the Town of Carrboro will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Yard waste and loose leaf collection will instead be collected early on Tuesday, June 18. More details of Carrboro’s affected services can be found here.

Town of Hillsborough

Similar to its neighbors, Hillsborough’s town offices and facilities will be closed on Wednesday. Garbage collection routes served on Wednesday by the town will see their collection combined with Thursday’s routes. For more information, click here.
