A pair of former Tar Heel women’s soccer stars–forward Summer Green and midfielder Megan Buckingham–are among 23 players currently competing for the United States U-23 National Team as it competes in the Nordic Tournament in Norway.
Green, who enrolled at UNC as a 16-year-old in 2012, currently plays for the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars after graduating in 2015. Buckingham graduated this past December and is now working as a defender for Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjaroar in Iceland.
The duo will begin competion in the Nordic Tournament when the U.S. takes on Sweden this Wednesday. Other scheduled games are on Aug. 31 vs. England and Sept. 3 against Norway.
“For the first time in the history of our U-23 women’s national team, we will be taking a roster consisting almost entirely of professional players,” U.S. head coach B.J. Snow said. “This is an exciting step in the evolution of this team but more importantly provides us a great indicator as to where women’s soccer is heading in our country.”
