Sophomore shortstop Ike Freeman drove in three runs on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field, leading the No. 10 UNC baseball team to a 5-4 victory over the No. 3 NC State Wolfpack.

The win helped UNC (31-13, 18-6 ACC) complete its first ever three-game sweep over the Wolfpack (31-11, 15-9 ACC) in Raleigh, and leaves the team all alone atop the ACC overall standings.

Freeman’s sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning helped UNC take a 1-0 lead when the throw home was off-line. Benches then cleared shortly after when Tar Heel first baseman Michael Busch collided with NC State catcher Jack Conley.

A wild pitch later in the inning helped bring home Cody Roberts and put the Tar Heels ahead 2-0 before NC State’s first chance to bat.

The Wolfpack got one run back in their half of the second frame, but UNC responded with another run in the third inning and two more in the fifth–building a 5-1 lead.

Brock Deatherage brought NC State back with a two-run home run in the home half of the fifth, while a wild pitch from Ben Casparius in the eighth allowed the Wolfpack to cut the deficit to a single run.

Casparius held tight in the ninth, however, by getting Stephen Pitarra to fly out with the bases loaded and two outs to earn the save.
