The red-hot UNC baseball team–now ranked 10th in the nation–continued its winning ways by clinching a series victory over the No. 3 NC State Wolfpack with an 8-6 win on Saturday night at Doak Field in Raleigh.

Sophomore right-hander Austin Bergner threw eight solid innings for the Tar Heels (30-13, 17-6 ACC), while striking out 11 Wolfpack hitters and allowing just five hits.

UNC jumped out to an early lead in the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back home runs from Michael Busch and Kyle Datres, and would later get another solo shot from Cody Roberts in the sixth.

With the Tar Heels ahead 4-1, NC State responded in the home half of the sixth with a two-run homer from slugger Will Wilson.

From there, UNC added four insurance runs–including three in the top of the ninth, led by Brandon Riley’s two-run single.

NC State made a valiant comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth, however, when it got back-to-back-to-back home runs from Wilson, Evan Edwards and Patrick Bailey.

It would not be enough, though, to overcome what started as a five-run deficit–handing the Tar Heels their 16th series victory in their 18 attempts.
