For the third year in a row–and fourth time in program history–the members of the UNC women’s lacrosse team can call themselves ACC Tournament champions.

The Tar Heels accomplished the feat Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham after handing the top-seeded Boston College Eagles a 14-11 loss–the first defeat of the season for the Eagles, who entered the day a perfect 19-0.

Freshman attacker Jamie Ortega led the way with a team-high six goals and one assist for UNC (15-3), setting a new ACC Tournament record in the process with 15 goals across the whole event.

On the other end of the field, goalie Taylor Moreno made 11 saves in the game and registered 33 across the whole tournament–earning a new event record of her own.

Moreno was also named the tournament’s MVP for her efforts.

The Tar Heels built a 9-6 lead at halftime, and held on down the stretch to clinch the victory. Both teams scored an even five goals after the break.

Boston College was led by four goals and an assist from Sam Apuzzo, who needed a whopping 12 shots to record that many scores with Moreno playing so well in front of the net for UNC.
