A showdown of two of the nation’s top five women’s lacrosse programs on Saturday saw the No. 2 Boston College Eagles defend their home turf with a 17-11 win over the fifth-ranked Tar Heels.

Senior midfielder Marie McCool scored both of her two goals in the second half for UNC, cutting Boston College’s lead down to 11-10 with just over 13 minutes to play.

The Eagles responded, however, by reeling off the next six consecutive goals–burying the Tar Heels (6-3, 1-1 ACC) in a hole they would not be able to climb out of.

Sam Apuzzo recorded four goals and five assists for Boston College, which improved to 12-0 so far this season (3-0 ACC), while Emma Schurr added two goals and three assists of her own.

UNC was led by three goals and three assists from Maggie Bill.

In total, the Eagles recorded 35 shots in the game compared to just 24 for head coach Jenny Levy’s Tar Heels. Boston College also had a 17-10 advantage in draw controls and drew nine free-position shots off fouls.

“Today’s game was a competitive battle between two really talented teams,” Levy said afterwards.  “Unfortunately we got ourselves into a tough situation, with 13:46 left in the 2nd half, a one goal game, we got called for a series of fouls.  Man-down goals and a lack of possession on the draw really hurt us.”
