Orange County Commissioners and the Chapel Hill Town Council met Thursday to continue discussing their ongoing efforts to help residents of Lakeview and Homestead mobile home parks, both of whom are facing displacement.
County and town officials learned of the issue earlier this year; in response, they developed a Manufactured Home Park Work Group and Rapid Response Team to discuss possible solutions, including relocation.
Loryn Clark, Chapel Hill’s executive housing director, says their priority was finding out residents’ needs.
“We did have two community meetings with the residents of Lakeview, and…we had strong participation,” says Clark. “We learned that most of the families are not interested in being relocated to another mobile home park, (and) they were not interested in a one time payment for relocation assistance.”
Sherrill Hampton, Orange County’s director of housing and community development, says all mobile home park owners in Orange County will be invited to a community meeting in April.
“We wanted to get their input, share with them what’s going on, share the needs,” said Hampton.
Clark says the next steps are continuing to analyze possible future relocation sites, including one on Millhouse Road, and developing a mobile home framework in case of future similar displacements.
