Autumn has arrived, and local government boards are returning to session this week after their summer hiatuses. In Chapel Hill this week, the Town Council will hear a proposal for a large mixed-use development along Weaver Dairy Road that would include hundreds of new housing units along with commercial and retail space. Hillsborough electeds will also hear a development proposal, for a plot of land south of downtown. And in Carrboro, board members will revisit the question of whether to charge for parking in public lots.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, September 9, with an agenda that includes an annual report on the town’s strategic plan and a rezoning request for Waterstone South in the southern part of town. Click here for the board’s full agenda.

Orange County Commissioners meet Tuesday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Click here for the agenda for their work session, which includes appointments to various boards and commissions, as well as a presentation on the county’s long-term land use plan.

The Chapel Hill Town Council convenes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11. Council members will hear details about a proposed mixed-use development behind Weaver Dairy Road that could include more than 500 new apartments and up to 300 for-sale housing units along with commercial and retail space and a possible hotel. The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 12. (That’s Thursday this week, as opposed to their usual Tuesday meeting time.) Council members will consider adjustments to staff salaries; they’ll get an update on the county’s short range transit plan; and they’ll continue discussing a proposal to start charging for parking in public lots. And the Orange County School Board meets Monday, September 9, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Click here for the full agenda, which includes a report on summer programs, a work session on updating the district’s website, and a presentation on student performance from the 2023-24 academic year.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, September 9. Commissioners will hear an annual report on solid waste, conduct a public hearing on an annexation request for Chatham Park, and consider a proposal to shift the 15/501 truck route to NC-87. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Chatham County school board also meets at 6 p.m. Monday, September 9. Board members will discuss student performance results from the 2023-24 school year and consider a pair of contracts to aid visually-impaired students and students who need speech therapy. Click here for the agenda.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, September 9, with a light agenda that includes a public hearing on sewer system updates. Get the full agenda here.

Finally, the Durham school board meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, September 12. Their agenda had not been made public as of Sunday, but will be available at this link.
