Budget season continues in local government, but elected town and county officials are drawing closer to a final vote: in fact one local town board is slated to approve next year’s budget this week. Also on local agendas: an affordable housing discussion in Orange County – and in Carrboro, a plan to move the ArtsCenter to a new location around the corner from its current spot.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is holding a public hearing and work session on Town Manager Eric Peterson’s budget proposal Monday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Get the full agenda at this link.

The budget is also on the agenda for the Carrboro Town Council when they meet Tuesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Town manager Richard White will present his budget proposal for next year; council members will also hold a public hearing on a plan to move the ArtsCenter to 400 Roberson Street downtown. Orange County Commissioners are also holding a work session on the budget Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. It’s a busy week for Orange County Commissioners; they also have a business meeting Tuesday, May 24, also in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Their Tuesday agenda includes a presentation on master planning and a discussion of the county’s action plan for manufactured homes.

And the Chapel Hill Town Council meets virtually on Wednesday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. Their agenda includes two items: a continued discussion on next year’s budget, and an update from the Booker Creek Working Group. Get the full agenda here.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Budget discussions also top the agendas in Chatham and Durham Counties.

In Durham, County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on County Manager Kimberly Sowell’s budget proposal when the board meets Monday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in commissioners’ chambers. Read the full agenda here.

The Durham City Council is also talking budget, with a pair of work sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 25-26, at 9 a.m. Get links to the agendas here.

In Pittsboro, Chatham County Commissioners are holding a budget work session on Tuesday, May 24, at 9 a.m. in the Agriculture & Conference Center. That discussion may continue into Wednesday and Thursday as well. Get a link to the full agenda here.

But the Pittsboro Board of Commissioners is ahead of everyone: they’re set to adopt Town Manager Chris Kennedy’s proposed budget when they meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 23. Read the full agenda here.
