This week in local government: the Chapel Hill Town Council will continue discussing the process of hiring a new town manager, and Orange County Commissioners will consider buying property for a crisis diversion facility. Also: Carrboro and Hillsborough will discuss bills in the General Assembly, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board will vote on a budget proposal for the next fiscal year.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets twice this week. First, the council will hold a special closed-session meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, April 14, to discuss the process of hiring the next town manager. Then the council is scheduled to reconvene for a work session Wednesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. The agenda includes a presentation from Orange County about the property revaluation process, along with a budget presentation from town staff.
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners also meets Monday, April 14, starting at 7 p.m. Board members will discuss funding requests for Congress and the General Assembly; they’ll also consider a pair of requests from residents for town code changes – one related to sewers and another related to encroachment into setbacks. The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. Council members will hear a presentation from OWASA, discuss the process of appointing members to boards and commissions, and get an overview of a trio of bills in the General Assembly that would affect local governments’ land-use planning abilities. Orange County Commissioners also meet Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Commissioners will hold a public hearing on next year’s transit work program; they’ll consider purchasing property for a crisis diversion facility; they’ll get a report on property taxes, including what the new property tax rate would need to be for the county to stay “revenue neutral” after this year’s property revaluation; and they’ll look ahead at upcoming budget meetings later this month. And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17. Their agenda includes a vote on next year’s budget, which would then be sent to county commissioners for adjustment and approval; the board will also vote on a 10-year capital investment plan and get the results of a recent public survey on the search for the district’s next superintendent. The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, April 14.
