This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
While many people are finalizing Valentine’s Day plans, our elected officials are also gearing up for a busy week of meetings. Each local government in Orange County has a board of commissioners or town council meeting scheduled, while it’s an off week for most in Durham and Chatham Counties.
Here’s a rundown of what to look out for:
Orange County
The week gets started with the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners holding a regular meeting for the first time since January 9 — although the group has held work sessions and a budget retreat since then. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex building and is relatively light on action items. Town commissioners will hear a presentation on Orange County Schools’ strategic plan implementation, an update on the finishing of a project for Corbinton Commons and an update on a project proposal for Lawrence Road. Find the agenda here.
Next, the Carrboro Town Council meets Tuesday, February 14, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall for a work session. The meeting has just one item for council members to discuss: hearing updates on the Bolin Creek Greenway. Specifically, the council will revisit what Phases 3 and 4 from the older plan entailed and talk about ways to gather public engagement on the project. Find the agenda and materials here.
Meanwhile, because the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education moved its meeting from Thursday to Tuesday, those elected officials will be meeting at the same time. A closed session at the Southern Human Services Center is set to begin at 6 p.m. and open session beginning afterward around 7 p.m. The school board has a lengthy consent agenda with district policy changes, but will discuss two proposed changes for the first time — one involving visitors to school property and the other about an international exchange program. Board members will also be receiving a presentation and recommendations of ways to optimize its transportation department amid a shortage of bus drivers. The full agenda can be found here.
The Chapel Hill Town Council will meet on Wednesday, like usual, with the February 15 meeting starting at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Council members will begin discussions on the next budget year, as well as providing feedback of a pair of elements of the town’s “Shaping Our Future” initiative. The town council will also receive an update on administering concept plan and conditional
zoning applications. Get the full agenda at this link.
Finally, the Orange County Commissioners are convening for a work session on Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Commissioners will discuss their legislative agenda for the General Assembly this year, and they’ll consider how to allocate $12 million in their excess fund balance from last fiscal year. Get the full agenda at this link.
Chatham and Durham Counties
The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners will be meeting this week, as it’s the second Monday of the month. The group will gather at the Chatham County Agricultural and Conference Center for a meeting 7 p.m. which can be followed along virtually. The commissioners will discuss several contracts for legal assistance to begin interlocal agreements, as well as hear an update from the Pittsboro ABC Commission and hold a discussion about meeting facilities for the board. Find the agenda here.
Meanwhile, the Durham City Council and the Durham Public School Board are off this week, but have meetings scheduled for the week of February 20.
