Kara Klages and Marie McCool each scored five goals Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome to help lead the fifth-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team to a 20-11 blowout on the road over the Syracuse Orange.

The Tar Heels (10-3, 5-1 ACC) led 8-5 at halftime, but saw that deficit shrink just a bit when Syracuse scored the first goal of the second half.

From there, however, it was all systems go for head coach Jenny Levy’s team–as UNC reeled off seven of the next nine goals before eventually finishing with a whopping 12 in the period.

“We were presented with challenges and opportunities during the game, and it was great to see our players effectively make the necessary adjustments,” Levy said afterwards. “We had great performances from many players.  Specifically, Marie McCool and Kara Klages were absolutely dominant, Maggie Bill set the tone early in the game and really got us off to a great start.”

For Klages, the five goals were a career high. Bill added to Klages and McCool’s great performances by chipping in four goals and an assist, while freshman Jamie Ortega tallied two goals of her own.

UNC dominated the draw control all day by winning 23 of 33 opportunities, and outshot the Orange 35-27.

The 20 goals were the most the Tar Heels have ever scored against Syracuse (8-7, 0-5 ACC), and the nine-goal margin is the biggest by either team in 12 all-time meetings in the sport.
