A matchup between the nation’s top two women’s lacrosse teams on Saturday at Dorrance Field saw the top-ranked Tar Heels demolish No. 2 Syracuse by a score of 17-6.

Jamie Ortega led UNC (11-0, 5-0 ACC) with five goals and three assists for a season-high eight points, while Katie Hoeg added three goals and four assists for seven points of her own.

Syracuse (6-1, 4-1 ACC) built a 4-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the momentum quickly shifted as UNC ended the game on a wildly impressive 16-2 run.

The Tar Heels scored their 17 goals on just 24 shots, leaving no doubt as to who the top team in America truly is.

By improving its record to 11-0, UNC also matched the best start to a season in program history. The Tar Heels have won their last 18 games overall dating back to last season.

“I think we got out of the gates a little slow,” head coach Jenny Levy said. “I think we did a really good job of recovering from the first few minutes, and then the offense figured out what they needed to do to have success.”
