Bryn Boylan scored on a penalty stroke in the second overtime on Friday at Karen Shelton Stadium, giving the top-ranked UNC field hockey team a 4-3 Senior Day victory over the No. 15 Duke Blue Devils.

This was the third meeting of the season between the Tar Heels (13-1) and Blue Devils (3-11), and the second straight that needed overtime to determine a winner.

Erin Matson scored the game’s first goal just over three minutes into the action, but Duke took the lead into halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Libby Thompson and Darcy Bourne.

In the second half, Cassie Sumfest tied the game on a penalty corner before Matson assisted on a goal from Paityn Wirth to give UNC the lead back.

It took Duke less than a minute to answer on the other end, however, as Noor van de Laar slipped a rebound past UNC goalie Amanda Hendry.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter or the first overtime period, bringing the tension to a high as Boylan stepped up for her game-winning penalty stroke attempt.

“You have to have good nerves to take a penalty stroke,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “She just stepped up like a champ and stuck it.

“I’m so proud we could get the win against Duke, on Senior Day,” she added. “They always say you throw out the records when Duke plays Carolina and that was absolutely the case today. It was a great game by two teams that went at it. It was everything you could ask for.”
