Five different players scored a goal for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team during Sunday’s Senior Day at Karen Shelton Stadium, leading the Tar Heels to a 5-2 victory over the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils.
The win improves UNC to 16-0 this season (6-0 ACC), while Duke drops to 13-4 (5-1 ACC). This game was the second between the two teams this season, and was counted in the standings as a non-conference showdown.
Megan DuVernois and Erin Matson each scored in the first half for the Tar Heels–putting the team up 2-0–before Duke’s Caroline Andretta got the Blue Devils on the board just before halftime.
Instead of letting the lead slip away, however, UNC added a third goal from Catherine Hayden in the 38th minute before Rose Tynan pulled Duke back within one goal about five minutes later.
From there, the Tar Heels would pull away on back-to-back goals from Hannah Griggs and Ashley Hoffman.
UNC ended the game with 19 shots on offense compared to just five for the Blue Devils.
