Another match, another win for the eighth-ranked UNC men’s tennis team–which defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.

It marks the eighth win in nine tries against ACC opponents this season for the Tar Heels (17-4, 8-1 ACC), which struggled a bit in putting away a Georgia Tech team that is 5-14 overall and just 1-9 in conference play.

The Tar Heels took an early lead by winning the doubles point, then built on it with back-to-back victories in singles play from William Blumberg and Robert Kelly.

Georgia Tech’s Andrew Li defeated UNC freshman Mac Kiger soon after to put the road team on the scoreboard, but the Tar Heels closed things out with a three-set victory by Blaine Boyden over Elijah Melendez (3-6, 6-3, 6-2).

Each of the other two singles matches that were left unfinished were also in the third set, as the Yellow Jackets put forth a respectable effort against a team with considerably more talent.

“Their record doesn’t reflect how good they are,” UNC head coach Sam Paul said afterwards, about Georgia Tech. “They’ve got a lot of experience. Credit to them – we knew it would be a tough match, so it’s good to get out of it.”
