Despite trailing 3-0 early in Sunday’s match against No. 14 South Carolina in Columbia, the top-ranked UNC men’s tennis team dug deep and rallied for a 4-3 victory to stay undefeated.
South Carolina won the doubles point to start the proceedings, then earned singles victories on court four and court one against UNC’s Brian Cernoch and William Blumberg.
From there, the Tar Heels (12-0) rallied to win each of the next four singles contests to earn the program’s 12th victory this season and 14th straight overall.
Rinky Hijikata (6-2, 6-4), Josh Peck (6-2, 2-6, 6-0), Simon Soendergaard (2-6, 7-6, 6-2) and Benjamin Sigouin (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) were responsible for UNC’s enormous comeback–with Soendergaard also fighting off four match points during his second set.
This was the largest deficit the Tar Heels have faced all season.
