After defeating South Carolina by a score of 4-1 on Monday in Chapel Hill as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend, the No. 2 UNC men’s tennis team earned its spot in the upcoming ITA National Indoor Tournament.
The Tar Heels won the doubles point to start the match, then took three of the first four singles matches to claim the victory.
Providing those singles wins for UNC were Benjamin Sigouin (6-4, 6-4), Brian Cernoch (6-1, 6-3) and Simon Soendergaard (6-3, 7-5).
This will mark the seventh season in a row the Tar Heels have qualified for the ITA National Indoor Tournament, which will begin on Feb. 12 and take place in Champaign, Illinois.
“I’m very glad our guys are moving forward,” Tar Heel head coach Sam Paul said afterwards. “This was a tough regional with some really good teams. Our guys have dealt with a lot to get to this point, including not playing in the fall and everything else. We’re not entirely where we want to be as a team yet, but we’re happy to advance and have another chance to get better.”
